The Maeli are sea-dwelling Au'ra with long fish tails and strikingly colourful scales.Before the Sixth Umbral Calamity, they protected endangered sea life with their magic.
Not unlike red magic, they had the capacity to heal and destroy in equal measure.
At their culture's core is a devoted love for life in all its variation, whether sentient or feral, or peaceful or destructive.
Because of this, they are great mediators and have never participated in war.Many Maeli were washed ashore during the calamity and not all made it back to the ocean. Those who stayed were known as Landwalkers, and it is believed that these Landwalkers went on to adapt to their new environment both culturally and anatomically.Landwalkers developed a deep comraderie with Red Mages and through the sharing of knowledge, became scholars in their own right.
Many travelled together, built communities together and sought to aid the world by continuing to share knowledge.

When King Theodore's army hunted the Red Mages, most Landwalkers were slain along with them.
Kohei, a powerful elder Landwalker, having lost all but a single child in the slayings, concluded that no good would come from remaining on land.
His sorrowful song wove a spell strong enough to seal the memory of the Maeli away, that the survivors might return to the sea and never contact land-dwellers again.Maeli culture changed after the slayings.
Now they were a withdrawn people, secretive and aggressive to those that might reveal their existence to the world.
Over time, they would become legendary as elusive sea monsters that drowned men with their songs.But time changes everything; despite a nurtured culture of fear, nothing could ultimately eradicate the curious nature of the Maeli.Inevitably, one of them would choose to swim against the tide.

The Shisui Temple was my home. Grandfather Kohei raised me - raised all of us. He is the eldest, so old that he saw our culture during the time when maeli walked on land. He experienced grief so great, that he changed our very culture to ensure longevity for the maeli.
We had survived, but in my soul I could feel the missing dynamis. Simply surviving could not be the only reason I was born.
So I ventured out of the darkness to find illuminating light on the surface.What I found was an injured bard on the beach, robbed of riches and dignity. I wrapped him in warmth and song and healed him.
The first emotion he showed me upon awakening was fear.He had questions, but so did I. His about the maeli, mine about the world. After lengthy conversation, he offered me a trade:
"Bring your friends and family next time and I might be in the mood to tell more tales. A bard needs an audience, aye?"The mere suggestion was enough to get me excommunicated from the temple. Devastated at the narrow-mindedness of my own blood, I sought comfort in my new bard friend the following morning.

I recall reaching the surface, then finding darkness again.
Next I awoke, I had been taken west to a land named Eorzea. Poached like common game for gil, I was tortured for failing to bring my family to the surface.My song that day was but a single note, screamed from the depths of my devastated soul. The bard I had once healed became still, along with his associates.
After several suns and moons, I would give myself landwalking legs, climb over broken wood and bones, and venture into the twelveswood.
Lacking direction and motivation, I eventually collapsed from exhaustion and cradled myself into a deep sleep. While I dreamt, I made a wish:"Please, Gods, show me a light brighter than this darkness."Kindness found me before I awoke, and when I opened my eyes I saw white-haired elezen twins and a kind-eyed traveller riddled with concern.What happened next, I believe you know.

Maeli is in relation to the word maelstrom.Maeli believe that Raen ancestors come from the sea and Xaela ancestors come from the sky.The magic Maeli use to protect aquatic life and defend themselves from predators is not unlike red magic.
It is equal parts capable of protection and destruction.All Maeli have a unique song, one they refine until it is perfected in adulthood. To those they love, it can heal and soothe them from most ailments. To those they despise, the song is physically painful to hear and can create frightening hallucinations.Maeli have a tendency to look for partners that embody Thaliak, Nymeia and Llymlaen's best traits.
